PD0342). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370707 AB OBJECTIVE: To investigate traditional behaviour practices that influence transmission of HIV among the Luo of Kenya. METHODS: Rapid appraisal approach involving in-depth interviews with a convenient sample of 92 key informants (widows of Luo men dead in the preceding 12 months). RESULTS: 47 (51%) widows were already inherited, 34 (36%) had plans to be inherited, 11 refused. Sex is an essential component of widow inheritance. 80% of men inheriting were married, one third had history of previously inheriting other widows, some were paid to inherit. One third of widows inherited had divorced previous partners and had new ones. CONCLUSION: Widow inheritance is a determinant of sexual behaviour among the Luo and is a risk factor for HIV transmission. Education and advocacy to change be enhanced at community level.
